Few personalities in baseball history have earned the level of respect accorded to New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre. Fewer yet can boast of the twin successes Torre has achieved on the playing field and in the dugout as a Manager.
Since taking over as Manager of the Yankees in November 1995, Torre has led the team to five World Series appearances in six years, winning the title four times. In 1996, his first season as skipper, he led the Yankees to their first championship since 1978. He then guided the Yanks to three straight world titles between 1998 and 2000, becoming the first team to three-peat since the Oakland A's in the 1970s. As a player, Torre won the National League MVP award as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971. In leading the league with a .363 batting average, 230 hits, 137 RBIs and 352 total bases, Torre became the first player to lead the National League in four offensive categories since Stan Musial in 1948. In his major league career, he compiled a .297 batting average, with 252 home runs and 1,185 RBIs. He made the All-Star team nine times.
Beyond his statistical accomplishments, Torre is known as one of the sport's true gentlemen. He has authored two books, a memoir and a management guide. Torre resides in Westchester County, New York, with his wife Ali. They have four children.
